An Example of Lack of Faith;

Jesus’ Belief [Mt.14:1–21]

1 Around the time of Jesus’ visit home [see 13:54], Herod the tetrarch heard about him. 2 “This is John the Baptist,” he said. “Raised from death, he can now do wonders.” 3 Herod had imprisoned John because of Herodias, wife of his brother, Philip. 4 For John had said, “It’s not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 5 He wanted to kill John, but he feared the crowd’s reverence of him as a prophet. 6 Then, at Herod’s birthday feast, Herodias’ daughter pleased everyone with a dance. 7 In his delight, Herod swore on his honor to give her anything she asked for. 8 Prodded by her mother, she said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head on a plate.” 9 He was chagrined, but, because of promising in front of guests, he gave the order. 10 He had John beheaded in prison. 11 The head was borne in on a plate and given to the girl, who gave it to her mother. 12 John’s body was buried by his disciples, who gave the news to Jesus. 13 When Jesus heard, he headed by boat to a quiet place to be alone. But crowds found out and pursued him on foot from several towns. 14 Landing, he was moved with pity by sight of this throng and he healed their sick. 15 Evening came, and so did the disciples. They said, “This is the middle of nowhere, and the hour’s late. Let the crowds go to nearby villages to buy food.” 16 He said, “They don’t have to leave; you feed them.” 17 “But all we’ve got,” they said, “are five loaves and two fish.” 18 “Bring those to me,” he said. 19 He told the crowds to settle on the grass. He took the loaves and fish. He looked to heaven. He blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples for the crowds. 20 They ate, were satisfied, and gathered up twelve baskets of leftovers. 21 About five thousand ate—not counting women and children.
